Can we talk about the lie you’ve probably told yourself at least a dozen times this year about starting a business?
“I’ll start when I feel ready.”
Girl. I need you to hear this with love: that feeling is not coming.
Not next month. Not after the certifications, and definitely Not after you’ve watched forty-seven more YouTube videos or bought one more course or finally organized your Notion workspace into something that looks like it belongs to a person with her life all put together.
Ready is a feeling & feelings are unreliable little liars who show up whenever they want, usually after you’ve already done the scary thing — not before.
Especially when you’re thinking about starting a business.
That’s because starting a business can feel like you’re supposed to have the whole damn thing figured out before you begin.
Your niche.
Your offer.
Your branding.
Your website.
Your social media strategy.
Your business plan.
Your five-year vision.
Meanwhile, you’re sitting there thinking:
“But what if I don’t even know what the hell I’m doing?”
Welcome to the club my sweet friend.
I know because I’ve been the woman waiting for the feelings to come, and I’ve also been the woman who finally stopped waiting. So let me tell you what changed.
Years ago, I had an idea I couldn’t shake. One of those “there has to be a better way” ideas that follows you around while you’re doing dishes and driving carpool and trying to fall asleep.
I didn’t act on it for months.
Why? Because I told myself I needed to know more first. I needed a better plan. I needed to feel like I actually knew what I was doing before I let anyone see me even try.
So I researched. And planned. And researched some more. I basically built an entire imaginary business in my head, I perfected it, and then never told a single soul about it, because in my head it was safe, and I was safe. Untouched. Not messy yet.
Here’s the thing about starting a business that only exists in your head: It can’t fail there. But it also can’t do a damn thing for you in there either.
The day I finally posted the thing — the clumsy, half-explained, “I’m not totally sure this makes sense -but here goes nothin'” version of my idea — nothing bad happened. Nobody laughed. Nobody sent a group text making fun of my typos. A few people even said, “Wait, tell me more about that.”
That messy first version taught me more in one day than three months of “getting ready” ever did.
Somewhere along the way, we all absorbed this idea that we have to be qualified before we can begin.
That we need confidence first.
That we need certainty first.
That we need to know exactly what we’re doing before we put ourselves out there.
That the successful women somehow had a ten-step plan before they ever took a single step.
They didn’t. And neither do you.
Confidence doesn’t come first.
Action does.
Confidence is what starts showing up after you’ve taken enough messy little actions to prove to yourself that you can figure this shit out.
You don’t think your way into confidence.
You act your way into it.
And this is especially important when you’re starting a business because there is no magical point where someone hands you a little certificate that says:
Congratulations! You are officially ready to be a business owner.
Sorry. That just doesn’t exist.
You’re going to learn as you go.
You’re going to change your mind (more times than you realize- that’s perfectly ok & totally normal).
You’re going to try things that don’t work – you’ll probably be a little pissed off that it didn’t work or at least not like you expected.
You’re going to look back at some of your early work and think: “Ohhhh… what the hell was I doing?”
And that’s okay. That’s business. You’re growing and learning!
Waiting to feel ready sounds responsible, it sounds smart, and it sounds like you’re being strategic.
“I’m just doing more research.”
“I’m still figuring out my niche.”
“I want to get my branding right first.”
“I need to learn a little more.”
And sometimes, yes, you genuinely do need more information like that.
But sometimes?
Fear is wearing a really convincing little business-casual mask.
Because if you keep researching, planning, tweaking, learning, and preparing…
You never have to risk finding out whether your idea actually works. And that can feel a hell of a lot safer.
But safe and stuck can look an awful lot alike.
I’ve watched brilliant women sit on incredible ideas because they thought they needed to become a different version of themselves before they were allowed to start.
More confident.
More experienced.
More successful.
More organized.
More knowledgeable.
Whatever the hell “enough” means in their heads.
But here’s what I want you to know:
You don’t become that woman and then start.
You start — and she gets built along the way.
I’m not here to hype you up for five minutes and then send you back into the same cycle of overthinking and spinning in circles.
So here’s what I actually want you to take from this:
Messy action beats perfect planning.
Not because planning is bad.
Planning absolutely has its place.
But planning without action?
That’s just a really elaborate way of staying stuck while feeling productive.
The truth is, you learn things by doing the things that no amount of research could ever teach you. You find out what your actual audience needs by talking to them, not by guessing in your head. You find out what your offer should say by putting a version of it out there and seeing how people respond.
You find out whether people actually want what you’re selling by asking them. You discover what you’re good at by doing it. You discover what you hate by doing that, too.
And you find out you’re more capable than you thought by doing the thing scared…
…and realizing you survived.
None of that happens in the planning phase.
It happens in the messy, imperfect, “I have no idea if this is right but let’s try it” phase.
And if you’re sitting there thinking:
“Okay, Heather. But I don’t even know WHAT business I’m supposed to start.”
That’s different but it’s ok I’ve got you.
You don’t need to force yourself into action just for the sake of action. You need to start getting curious.
What are you naturally good at?
What problems do people already come to you for help with?
What could you happily talk about for hours?
What kind of work fits the life you actually want?
Do you want clients?
Digital products?
Services?
Something creative?
Something flexible?
Something that can eventually run without you being glued to your laptop all damn day?
Because here’s another mistake I see women make:
They start with: “What business should I start?”
Instead, start with: “What kind of life do I want my business to create?”
That’s a much better question, because the goal isn’t just to have a business.
The goal is to build a business that supports the life you actually want to live.
Before you worry about logos, websites, Instagram, or what the hell you’re supposed to post, let’s figure out the business itself.
Start creating a business around your strengths, goals, lifestyle, and the life you actually want.
I’m not going to hand you twenty things to do today. That’s not how we do things around here.
Here’s your one step:
Pick the smallest possible version of the thing you’ve been waiting to feel ready for, and do it before the end of the day.
Not the big scary launch.
Not the perfect sales page.
The smallest version.
That might look something like:
It’s Small.
It’s Messy.
It’s Real.
It starts Today.
You are allowed to fix it later.
You are allowed to change your mind.
You are allowed to learn as you go.
You are allowed to make version two better than version one.
You are not required to have it all figured out before you begin.
This isn’t about recklessness.
I’m not telling you to quit your job tomorrow and wing it. I’m not telling you to throw your savings at a business idea you haven’t tested. I’m not telling you preparation doesn’t matter because it does.
I’m telling you there’s a difference between preparing to start and using preparation as a reason not to start.
You can build thoughtfully.
You can make smart decisions.
You can create a plan.
You can learn what you need to learn.
And you can still start before you feel completely ready.
Because the version of you who feels totally ready doesn’t exist yet.
She gets built through doing the things.
I want to be really clear about something:
You are not behind.
You are not the only one who feels like she’s making this up as she goes. You’re not the only woman Googling things at midnight. You’re not the only one wondering whether you’re actually capable of pulling this off, and you know every woman that you admire who looks like she has it all figured out?
She started somewhere.
She had a first offer.
A first post.
A first client.
A first awkward sales conversation.
A first website.
A first mistake.
A first version that probably makes her cringe a little now.
She wasn’t magically more ready than you.
She just started earlier.
One day, you’ll look back at the messy first version of whatever you’re building right now, and you’ll laugh. You’ll cringe a little. And you’ll be so, so glad you didn’t wait for the feeling that never comes.
Because the woman who starts messy today?
She’s the woman who looks confident and “ready” a year from now. Not because she waited until she became her.
Because she started building her one step at a time.
So if you’ve been waiting for permission… Here it is.
If you’ve been waiting for confidence…
Go without it.
If you’ve been waiting until you know exactly what you’re doing… You’re probably going to be waiting forever. pssst… Let me tell you a secrete… No one ever knows exactly what they’re doing.
So you don’t need to feel ready.
You just need to start.
You’re actually going to do it, aren’t you? Good. Go build your dreams. Go be messy. I’m cheering for you the whole way.
If you’re tired of waiting for the “ready” feeling and you’re ready for a simple next step toward actually building your business, I’ve got something that can help you get clear without overthinking it into oblivion. Let’s build this together.
