Can we talk about the question that’s probably been quietly driving you a little fucking crazy about starting a business?
“What’s my business idea?”
Maybe you’ve asked it a hundred different ways.
You’ve Googled best businesses to start.
You’ve saved approximately 47 Pinterest pins about profitable business ideas.
You’ve taken the quizzes.
You’ve started a Notes app called “Business Ideas” that somehow contains 13 completely unrelated things.
And then you’ve talked yourself out of every single one.
Too competitive.
I don’t know enough.
Someone else is already doing it.
I don’t think I’d be good at that.
Would anyone actually pay for this?
So you keep looking. And looking. And looking….
Here’s what I want you to hear:
You might not be stuck because you haven’t found the right business idea. You might be stuck because you’re starting with the wrong question.
When you decide you want to start a business, the internet immediately tells you to figure out your niche.
No wonder you’re overwhelmed.
We’re constantly told that the first step is finding The Perfect Business Idea™.
So we go looking for it.
We research the trends, we look at what other women are doing and we ask ourselves;
What could I sell?
What’s profitable?
What’s trending?
What am I even good at?
And somewhere in the middle of comparing 15 different business models, you lose sight of the thing you actually wanted in the first place.
A different life.
Instead of asking: “What business should I start?”
I want you to ask:
Not someday.
Not in your imaginary “when I’m successful” life.
Your actual Tuesday.
Because here’s what I’ve learned:
The business is not the destination. It’s the vehicle.
And you need to know where the hell you’re going before you choose the vehicle.
Do you want to be home when your kids get off the bus?
Do you want the freedom to travel without asking your boss for permission?
Do you want to work from home?
Do you want quiet mornings instead of rushing out the door?
Do you want to work three or four days a week?
Do you want to build a huge company, hire a team, and eventually step into a true CEO role?
Or do you want a small and simple business that gives you more breathing room and pays the bills?
Maybe you want a little bit of all of it.
There is no wrong answer.
Your answer matters! Because the business that gives one woman exactly the freedom she’s looking for, could make another woman absolutely miserable. That’s where we get ourselves into trouble.
We see someone else’s business working beautifully and think: “Maybe that’s what I should do.”
But what if her version of success isn’t your version?
I’ve been on both sides of this, I’ve built businesses because I genuinely loved the idea of creating something of my own. I have also had moments where I looked at what I thought I was supposed to be doing and wondered whether I was building something that actually fit the life I wanted. And eventually, I had to get really honest with myself (that can be a hard pill to swallow lol trust me). I realized I didn’t just want to have a business but I wanted the freedom that I believed a business could give me. I wanted to be able to work remotely and I wanted more control over my schedule so I could travel when I wanted. I wanted to be able to spend more time with my son instead of constantly feeling like work was competing with my life. I creaved financial independence.
And I didn’t want to build myself another job just because I happened to be the boss.
That distinction matters.
Because if you don’t decide what you want your life to look like first, it’s incredibly easy to build a business that looks successful from the outside…
…while quietly making you miserable on the inside.
Nobody teaches us to start with the life. We’re taught to start with the hustle.
And we’ll figure out the life part later. Except “later” has a funny way of becoming:
“Maybe next year.”
Then suddenly you’re working nights. You’re answering emails on weekends. You’re rearranging your entire life around your business. And you’re wondering:
“Wait… wasn’t this supposed to give me more freedom?”
That’s not the dream. That’s just a boss with your name on the paycheck. Your business should support your life.
Your life shouldn’t have to constantly bend around your business.
Here’s the shift I want you to make:
Once you know that, your decisions become so much easier.
If you want to travel regularly, you’re probably going to think differently about how your business operates.
If you want to be available for your kids in the afternoons, you’re going to care a lot more about flexibility than someone who loves working 60-hour weeks.
If you want to eventually build a team and become a CEO, you’ll make different decisions than someone who wants a simple one-person business.
If you want to replace your income as quickly as possible, your business model matters.
If you want maximum freedom and flexibility, your revenue streams matter.
The goal isn’t to find the “best” business. It’s to find the business that makes sense for you.
That’s a very different question.
I’m not going to give you a 47-step business planning exercise.
Grab your coffee.
Take 10 minutes.
And answer this:
Not your dream vacation.
Not the highlight reel.
Not the version where you’re living in a mansion and drinking champagne at noon because apparently that’s what financial freedom looks like on Instagram.
I’m talking about an ordinary Tuesday ask yourself the following;
Or maybe you’re doing absolutely nothing business-related because it’s Tuesday and you decided to take the damn day off.
Write it down.
Get ridiculously specific. Because that Tuesday is your compass.
When you’re deciding what business to start, what to sell, who to serve, how much to charge, how much content to create, or whether an opportunity is actually worth your time…
Come back to that Tuesday.
Does this move you closer to it or further away from it?
That’s the question.
That’s okay.
Seriously.
You don’t need to have the answer today.
Getting clear on the life you want doesn’t magically make a business idea appear above your head with a little glowing lightbulb. But it gives you something much more valuable:
A filter.
Suddenly, you can look at a business idea and ask:
Does this fit the life I want?
Does it use my strengths?
Do I actually want to spend my time doing this?
Does the way this business makes money work for me?
Can it grow in the direction I eventually want to go?
And some ideas will fall away. Good. That’s not failure.
That’s clarity.
Other ideas will start making a hell of a lot more sense. And sometimes the business you end up building won’t look anything like the one you originally imagined. That’s okay, too. You’re allowed to evolve.
If you’ve been beating yourself up because you “still don’t have a business idea,” I want you to stop.
You’re not behind.
You’re not bad at business.
You’re not lacking some magical entrepreneurial gene everyone else was handed at birth.
You might simply be trying to solve the wrong problem.
You don’t need to know exactly what business you’re going to build before you start figuring out what you want that business to do for you. And please don’t let someone else’s version of success convince you that you’ve failed.
Maybe your dream isn’t a seven-figure company.
Maybe it is.
Maybe you want a little extra income.
Maybe you want to replace your salary.
Maybe you want to build something huge and eventually sell it.
Maybe you want to work four days a week and spend Fridays with your kids.
Only YOU get to decide. That’s the whole damn point.
You’re looking for a business that makes sense for your life. And once you know what that life looks like, everything gets easier to evaluate.
The idea.
The business model.
The audience.
The offer.
The schedule.
The money.
The strategy.
You stop chasing whatever looks successful on someone else’s Instagram and start building something that actually belongs to you.
That’s the kind of business I want women to build.
Not businesses that look impressive but leave them exhausted.
Not businesses built around someone else’s blueprint.
Not businesses that require them to become a completely different person to succeed.
Businesses that create more freedom, confidence, financial independence, and choice.
Because you don’t need another job. You need a business that helps you create the life you actually want. And that starts with getting honest about what that life looks like.
So go write down your Tuesday.
Start there.
The business idea can come next.
Knowing the life you want is the first step.
Now let’s figure out what kind of business can help you create it.
I’ve created Build the Business You’re Meant to Own to help you get clear on the business that aligns with your strengths, personality, goals, lifestyle, and the kind of life you actually want to live.
No more randomly Googling “best business to start.”
No more collecting 37 business ideas and doing nothing with them.
Let’s figure out what makes sense for you.
