You posted, You sent the email, and You made the pitch.
And the response was… crickets. Maybe you got a like from your Aunt Linda, who likes everything, including that one photo of your dog on the couch.
Here’s what I wish someone had told me: it’s usually not your product, your price, or your posting schedule. It’s that you’re talking to nobody in particular, it can be hard to grasp sometimes, especially after you put in all that work.
So let’s talk about how to find your ideal client, because it quietly makes or breaks everything else in your business.
By the end of this post, you’ll know why she matters so much, how to get clear on her in three small steps, and why it’s totally okay if she changes along the way.
Clarity, not perfection. Let’s make this easier.
When I first started, I wrote what I thought was a gorgeous post. It was for “entrepreneurs, moms, travelers, small business owners, and anyone who wants more freedom.”
So, basically? Humans. With Wi-Fi…
I spent two hours in Canva staring at fonts like they owed me money. I posted it. Refreshed. Went to get a snack. Refreshed again.
Crickets. My mom liked it. Twice. I think, because she forgot she already had liked it.
A few days later, a woman I’d been chatting with said, kindly, “I never know if you’re talking to me.”
Ouch. And also: correct.
So I tried something annoying and simple. I pictured one woman at 10:45 p.m., kids finally asleep, laptop open, wondering if starting a business is even a smart idea for someone like her. I wrote to her.
That post got saved. Shared. Answered. Same me. Same Canva. Different question.
Not the “who can I reach?” but the “who am I here for?”
You’ve probably heard it: Don’t narrow down. Cast a wide net. If you get specific, you’ll miss out blah blah blah.
Here’s the truth. When you talk to everyone, no one feels spoken to, it’s like you just shouted into a room full of people but no one knows who your yelling at.
Narrow isn’t small. Narrow is clear.
And here’s the part nobody mentions: your ideal client isn’t a tattoo. She’s allowed to change as you grow. Choosing her today doesn’t lock you in forever. It just gives you somewhere to start.
You don’t need a market research team. You need to look at who’s already in your orbit.
Clients. Friends who text you for advice. The DMs that make you light up. Even the version of you from three years ago.
Who did you love helping? Who did you walk away from thinking, “I’d do that again for free”? That’s a clue.
Try this: Spend 15 minutes writing down three women you’ve enjoyed helping, or wish you’d had helped. Next to each name, jot what they have in common: their stage of life, their struggle, the question they kept asking you.
“Women 30 to 45” doesn’t tell you a thing. What she’s stuck on does.
She’s not typing “I need a brand strategy.” She’s typing “I have no idea where to start” or “Why does everyone else seem to know what they’re doing?”
When you start to use her words, she begins to feel understood. And understood is where trust begins.
Try this: Take 10 minutes and finish this sentence five different ways: “She’s lying awake thinking…” Write it exactly how she’d say it, not how a marketing textbook would. Save those lines. They’re copywriting gold.
Your first ideal client is a first draft.
Beginner-you may serve beginners. A year from now, you might be ready for women who are scaling. Your business grows, you grow, and who you serve can grow too.
That’s not failing. That’s a business growing up.
Try this: Take five minutes to put a reminder on your calendar for 90 days from now: “Is she still my woman?” Then ask yourself two questions. Has she changed? Have I?
Girl… you don’t have to get this perfect. You just have to get it clearer than it was this morning.
If you jotted down even one name or one sentence today, you’ve already done more than most people who stay stuck in “I’ll figure it out later.” You can start messy and refine as you go.
Remember you don’t need permission. You need one woman in mind and a little momentum. And you’ve got both now.
If this feels like your next step, or you feel like you might need some guidance, I made something to help.
The Audience Clarity AI Prompt (starting at $27) is a guided AI conversation built to help you get clear on exactly who you’re here to serve, without staring at a blank page wondering where to begin.
