If you’re overwhelmed starting a business right now, I’m willing to bet your to-do list looks a little something like this:
Figure out my niche.
And somehow you’re also supposed to sell something.
No wonder you’re overwhelmed.
The problem isn’t that you’re not working hard enough. The problem might be that you’re trying to do too damn much at once.
And when you’re building a business, it’s incredibly easy to convince yourself that every task is important because technically… it probably is.
Eventually
But eventually isn’t the same thing as right now.
There’s one question I want you to start asking before you add another task to your business to-do list:
Not could it help someday?
Not does everyone else seem to be doing it?
Not wouldn’t it be nice to have this finished?
Will this ACTUALLY move my business forward right now?
That one question can eliminate a shocking amount of the noise.
There is more business advice available to you than ever before.
And honestly?
That’s both amazing and completely fucking exhausting.
You can find someone telling you exactly how to:
And because all of these things can work, it’s easy to assume you need to do all of them.
You don’t.
You need to know what your business needs next.
That’s a very different question.
This is something I wish more women understood. Your business doesn’t need the same things from you at every stage.
If you’re still trying to figure out what business you actually want to build, you don’t need a complicated marketing strategy.
– You need clarity.
If you’ve figured out your business but don’t know who you’re selling to, you don’t need to create 30 pieces of content.
– You need audience clarity.
If you know your audience but don’t have something they can buy, you don’t need another branding workshop.
– You need an offer.
If you have an offer but nobody knows it exists, then marketing becomes a much bigger priority.
Do you see the difference?
The question isn’t: “What should a business owner be doing?”
The question is: “What does MY business need from me right now?”
That question changes everything.
This one gets me because it looks so damn responsible.
You aren’t sitting on the couch watching Netflix (I know… I wish that could be the case somedays lol).
In reality though;
And at the end of the night you think:
“I worked on my business for three hours.”
But did you actually move the business forward? Because there’s a difference between working on your business and moving your business forward.
Sometimes the work that feels the most productive is actually the work that allows us to avoid the work that feels uncomfortable.
I know for a fact it’s much easier to redesign your website than to send the message to a potential customer, easier to research another business model than to choose one (too many choices… and what if I choice the wrong one?), it’s sometimes easier to plan 30 days of content than to publish the first post, easier to keep learning than to put your offer in front of someone and hear what they actually think.
And I’m not saying those things don’t matter. They absolutely do!
Just not always right now.
That depends on where you are.
And this is where I want you to stop comparing your business to someone else’s.
If you’re at the beginning, moving forward might mean:
Getting clear on what you want to build.
If that’s the case for you than;
In this moment you need clarity.
If you know what you’re building but you’re struggling to reach the right people, moving forward might mean:
Getting clear on your audience.
If you know your audience but don’t have something to sell:
Create the offer.
If you have an offer but aren’t getting sales:
Talk to people. Find out what’s missing. Improve the offer.
If people are interested but don’t understand why they should buy:
Work on your messaging.
If your offer is solid and your message is clear:
Then focus on getting it in front of more people.
There is an order to this.
You don’t have to do everything at once…. Unless you like the feeling of overwhelm than by all mean I won’t stop you…. Don’t recommend you stay there long though. (That’s just my opinion but you do you boo)
Here’s the question I want sitting beside you every time you open your laptop:
Not your ultimate five-year goals, they are great and a must have but this is not the time nor place for those.
Here are some great idea’s but really think about what you want. Your next result;
Whatever that next milestone is, work backward.
What has to happen before I can get there?
Then ask:
What’s the most important thing I can do to make that happen?
That’s your priority.
Everything else can wait.
This is probably one of the biggest lessons I’ve had to learn myself.
Especially when you’re the kind of woman who can see 14 possibilities and immediately start thinking:
“Ooooh, I could do that too.”
Trust me.
I get it.
There are so many ways you could build a business.
But just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should do it right now, for instance;
But you don’t need to do all of that to build a business.
And you definitely don’t need to do all of it at the same time.
Your business needs focus.
You need focus.
Here’s a simple filter you can use every time your business to-do list starts getting out of control.
Take every task and ask:
If yes, keep it.
If yes, keep it.
Put it on the “not right now” list.
Ouch. But answer honestly.
If the answer is “Honestly? Nothing.”
You probably don’t need it on this week’s list.
I don’t want you to leave this article thinking you need to become some productivity machine.
That’s not the goal.
The goal is to stop confusing more with better.
Because if you’re building a business for freedom, financial independence, flexibility, or more choice in your life… then building yourself a business that requires you to constantly work harder isn’t exactly the point.
I’ve had to think about this in my own business journey too.
I didn’t want to build a business simply so I can say I have a business (though it is fun to say that) but really I want to build something that creates freedom, confidence, financial independence, and choice.
I want the business to support my life without requiring all my time, my time is precious and I want to use it as I see fit.
And if that’s what we’re building, then we have to be willing to make business decisions based on the life we’re trying to create—not what somebody on the internet says we should be doing.
Close the 47 tabs
I see you my fellow ADHDers open a new window and minimize the one with all your tabs. I know if I close all of mine than I will forget the things I had to do or were needing to do lol. You can also look at installing “One Tab” extension but do that later lol
Ignore the new strategy you just saw on Instagram.
Forget about what everyone else is doing for a minute.
Look at your business.
Then ask:
Maybe it’s figuring out what you’re actually building.
Maybe it’s choosing your audience.
Maybe it’s creating your offer.
Maybe it’s making your first sale.
Maybe it’s getting your message in front of the right people.
Maybe it’s simplifying something that’s become unnecessarily complicated.
Whatever the answer is…
Do that.
Not everything.
Not the next 15 things.
That.
Then tomorrow, ask the question again.
Because building a business doesn’t require you to know every step from here to the finish line. It requires you to know the next step.
And then take it.
If you’re overwhelmed starting a business right now, please don’t automatically assume you’re doing something wrong.
You might simply be trying to build five businesses at once – been there.
You might be consuming so much information that you can’t hear your own instincts anymore – been here.
Or you might be trying to build someone else’s version of success – and here.
You don’t need to catch up.
You don’t need to do everything.
You don’t need to become a different woman to build a successful business.
You need clarity about what matters now.
And then you need the courage to let the rest wait.
Because your business doesn’t need every damn thing from you.
It needs the right thing from you.
And sometimes the most powerful business move you can make… is deciding what you’re not going to do.
And if you’re reading this thinking:
“Okay, Heather…but my problem is that I don’t even know what business I should be building yet.”
Start there.
Before you worry about your website, your content calendar, your branding, your social media strategy, or everything else you’ve been told you need…
Let’s figure out the business.
I’ve created Build the Business You’re Meant to Own to help you get clear on a business that fits your strengths, personality, goals, lifestyle, and the life you actually want to create.
Because you don’t need another 47 things on your to-do list.
You need a direction.
Then we can build from there.
One blueprint at a time.
